BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport’s alumni family welcomed more than 2,200 new members Saturday as Brockport celebrated its 2014 Undergraduate Commencement during two ceremonies held in the College’s Special Events Recreation Center (SERC).
The graduates heard from a number of speakers, including an international business leader who graduated from Brockport in 1974 with a degree in economics.
Joe Doody, vice chairman of Staples Inc., delivered the ceremony’s commencement address and shared experiences that helped shaped him and his family. He then made a prediction about the future.
“Forty to 50 years from now in a quiet moment of reflection, you will look back on your life’s journey and all the choices you have made along the way,” Doody said. “We all have choices – remember some of mine – follow your heart, leave the comfort zone, and bounce back from the knock-downs.”
Doody leads Staples’ strategic reinvention and has responsibility for strategic planning and business development as well as the company’s operations in Australia, New Zealand, and high-growth markets. He currently serves as Chair of the Brockport Foundation and co-chairs the College’s $25 million fundraising campaign.
Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD, reminded students why everyone was present. “We’re here to honor the academic accomplishments of you—our students,” he said. “Your learning does not stop today. We’ve prepared you well for this journey. Enjoy it!”
The ceremony concluded with two members of the Class of 2014. Jackie Shine and Brent Swanson presented President Halstead with a check for $8,800 on behalf of the class of 2014 for the purpose of creating a scholarship. Brockport Student Government President Sean Ferguson then bid a sentimental farewell to his classmates.
“It is a very bittersweet feeling thinking that our time together here at the college is coming to an end. But that simply means we have new opportunities and adventures to look forward to in the future,” Ferguson said. “So looking back at these four years, I am so happy to think that I shared this time with all of you. Each one of you has contributed to this amazing experience and I wish you all the best of luck in your years to come.”
