Brockport, NY – John R. Halstead, PhD, the sixth president of The College at Brockport, State University of New York, announced today his intention to retire at the end of August 2015. He has been Brockport’s president since 2005.
“It’s been a distinct privilege to serve The College at Brockport—and will continue to be—as I complete a decade in the year ahead,” said Halstead. “I can truly say that during my 35 years serving as a university vice president and college president, this chapter of my career has been the most rewarding since all that we do at Brockport is in the name of student success. Thus, the transformations in the living and learning environments—from our new Liberal Arts Building to our Special Events Recreation Center to the Townhomes—have all been accomplished to enhance the educational experiences of our students.”
President Halstead became Brockport’s president in August 2005, following seven years as the president of Mansfield University in Pennsylvania. His 35 years as a higher education executive includes vice presidential positions at University of Maine and Gonzaga University. He also served in student affairs positions at The Ohio State University, College of the Holy Cross, and Boston University during his career.
“The College at Brockport has thrived under President Halstead’s leadership over the last decade,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The college is consistently recognized as a top value for students and has become a leader within SUNY for expanding applied learning opportunities, among others, that prepare students for success in today’s competitive economy. Dr. Halstead has forged valuable partnerships in the local community, and across SUNY and New York State, and his leadership will certainly be missed. We wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Scott Turner, chair of Brockport’s College Council, was involved in the search to bring President Halstead to Brockport.
“John Halstead has had a remarkable tenure at the helm of The College at Brockport,” said Turner. “Chief among his many, many accomplishments are the College’s intense focus on student success, the strength of the College’s senior leadership team, and the launch of our first ever comprehensive capital campaign, a campaign that is nearing its goal of $25 million. We will miss John’s leadership after the end of this academic year, but he will leave an institution well positioned for many years into the future.”
President Halstead has always focused on Brockport’s students, with a focus on Student Success being part of every major speech and strategic plan during his tenure. Under his leadership the College has placed an emphasis on student engagement, incorporating high impact practices in and out of the classroom.
Among his many notable accomplishments, President Halstead has been instrumental in improving the College’s infrastructure and landscape. Highlights include:
• Townhome Residential Living Complex (summer 2007)
• Special Events Recreation Center (fall 1012)
• Liberal Arts Building (fall 2014)
President Halstead has also helped position the College for future growth and success through the school’s largest fundraising campaign. The $25 million campaign is currently at approximately $22 million.
“The successful completion of our comprehensive campaign will ensure that future generations of students thrive and benefit from the highest quality education both in and out of the classroom,” Halstead said.
President Halstead is active outside of the College, serving as President of the Rochester Area Colleges, Inc., a consortium of 19-area private and public universities. He also served on Unity Health's Board and Quality/Safety Committee following serving on the Unity Finance Committee.
