BROCKPORT, NY—More than 1,100 new freshmen and more than 900 new transfer students descended on The College at Brockport, State University of New York, campus this week. And they were met by a team of more than 300 Brockport volunteers who aimed to make the move as easy as possible.
Brockport’s annual Welcome Weekend is underway. Faculty, staff, and student volunteers met the College’s newest residents and their families as they arrived, loaded their belongings into golf carts, and moved them into their residence halls.
With faculty and staff eager to welcome their newest students, move-in day is filled with mixed emotions for the students and their parents.
Jordan Arnold, a freshman from Greece, NY, described his emotions as bittersweet today. Part of the reason he selected Brockport was that it was close to home.
“It’s tough leaving behind my family and friends, but at the same time I’m excited to meet new people and have a lot of fun,” Arnold said. “This feels like a very warm place.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Linda Fensken, who moved her son Jeff in on Friday. Jeff participated in Scholars Sleepover, an event organized by Undergraduate Admissions that enables prospective students to experience a day and night on the Brockport campus, earlier this year. She said that the warm experience her family encountered was a major factor in Jeff’s college decision.
“It’s so comfortable here,” said Linda, who traveled from Syracuse, NY. “Jeff said the guys he met at Scholars Sleepover felt like brothers. He felt like he belonged right away.”
