Department of Business Administration and Economics Appoints New Chair

William H. Dresnack, associate professor in the Department of Business Administration and Economics, was recently named department chair. Dresnack succeeds Steven T. Breslawski, associate professor, who served as department chair for seven years. Dresnack joined the SUNY Brockport faculty in 1989 and has served in a variety of leadership roles within the department and in roles of leadership at the College. In the 1999-2000 academic year, Dresnack received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the most prestigious achievement award for faculty in the SUNY system. That same year he also received the campus-wide Outstanding Service to Student Award in recognition of his extraordinary dedication to students outside of the classroom.
Prior to teaching, Dresnack worked in public accounting for Deloitte & Touche LLP and KPMG LLP, and in financial reporting and compliance for a large savings and loan association. A CPA and attorney, he received his JD from the University at Buffalo and his MS in accounting from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He also holds a BS in business management from Long Island University.
Dresnack is active in his profession and is currently the President of the Rochester Chapter of the New York State Society of CPA's. He previously held the offices of President-elect and Vice President, among others. He also holds active memberships in the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Management Accountants, the New York State Bar Association, and the Monroe County Bar Association.
SUNY Brockport's business programs recently achieved accreditation by AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International, the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. Institutions that earn accreditation confirm their commitment to quality and continuous improvement through a rigorous and comprehensive peer review.
Dresnack promoted to department chair/pg 2
In his new role, Dresnack will continue the process of growth, development and continuous improvement of the department and its programs. In addition to teaching and scholarly activities, Dresnack will specifically be responsible for: departmental strategic planning; service to the department's 880 students and 26 full-time faculty; academic scheduling; budget management; and fostering relationships with school districts, community colleges and the business community.
"The Department needs to go beyond accreditation and develop a more extensive external network with industry, alumni, recruiters, and graduate and law schools. We also need to work toward fund raising to provide the means by which we may continue to raise the profile of the department and achieve our vision of stakeholder recognition of the high quality business education we provide," Dresnack said.
Dresnack also hopes the College will support a restructuring of the department as a separate school of management. "Separate status would more easily enable the processes by which we can, as Wayne Gretsky said, 'skate to where the puck is going' rather than to where it is. This is also the reason that a priority for me will be pursuing the establishment of graduate programs. These initiatives are, however, subject to the assumption that there will be adequate demand, and the need to locate more sources of external funding. These are long-term goals, but I hope in my term as chair to move the department closer to the realization of these goals," he said.
Dresnack officially assumes the role of chairperson on September 1.
Dresnack can be reached for interview at (585) 395-5532.
Editor please note: Dresnack is a resident of the Village of Brockport.
