SUNY BROCKPORT’S PRODUCTION OF “ONCE ON THIS ISLAND” LAUDED

BY KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATRE FESTIVAL

Brockport, NY – The SUNY College at Brockport production of “Once on this Island” has been lauded by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). The KCACTF recommended the production for its festival in January 2005.

In addition, Christopher Walker, of Jamaica, West Indies, who is completing an MFA in dance, was awarded a Certificate of Merit in Choreography.

Three other students were nominated for Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships:

· LaShonda Davis: sophomore EOP student, from Rochester, NY.

· Erin Williamson: senior psychology major, from Sherrill, NY, Onondaga County.

· Stephanie Paredes: who graduated with a communication degree in May, from Rochester. She was also nominated for an Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship for her performance as the grandmother in the College’s 2003 production of Maggie Magalita.

According to P. Gibson Ralph, theatre chairperson, “I think the commentary and glowing response is a testament to the talent and cooperation between the departments of theatre and dance.”

According to the reviewer, the College’s production of Once on this Island, written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, “showed an integrity and maturity in the design and execution. It was difficult to see where directing left off and choreography began. Overall there was a joy in the performance – and in general a clarity of execution – with many elegantly rendered dance sequences and moments of visual beauty and theatrical invention.”

SUNY College at Brockport’s Department of Theatre’s 2004-2005 season productions include The Shape of Things, Oxygen, Festival of Ten (10 new 10-minute plays) and Murderer. For more information, visit www.brockport.edu/finearts/ or call (585) 395-ARTS.
