Local Businesses Lend a Hand with Renovations of Historic Alumni House on the SUNY College at Brockport Campus

Press Release Photo

Brockport, NY — SUNY College at Brockport's Alumni Association recently added a new green lamorite slate roof to its historic Alumni House, thanks to the work and donations of local businesses — Repair and Remodel, LLC (Clarkson, NY), Lakeside Building Products (Brockport, NY) and Suburban Disposal (Spencerport, NY).

SUNY Brockport alumnus Gary Skoog ’65 also contributed to the latest round of upgrades by completing exterior painting on the house. “I wanted to treat the house with appropriate respect,” said Skoog, who owns Skoog Farm in Brockport, NY, and has experience in historic home renovation.

Repair and Remodel, LLC (Clarkson, NY), owned by Rick Davis, installed the new roof and reduced the installation fee of the roofing materials saving the College $3,500. Suburban Disposal (Spencerport, NY) donated delivery charges on roll-off units totaling $150. Lakeside Building Products donated $1,000 of product pricing and allowed use of its warehouse for storage of materials, saving $300 for a storage container. “We are very pleased with the work by Rick Davis and Repair and Remodel as well as the cooperation of so many of the local businesses Rick used to help complete this project. And Gary Skoog, one of our valued graduates, did an exceptional job in painting the west side of the House and completing several other important upgrades,” said Mike Andriatch, executive director of alumni relations and major projects at the College.

Located at 142 Utica Street in Brockport, NY, the Alumni House is the oldest building on the College campus. A Victorian home, it was built in 1872 by Edward Harrison. Deeded to the state in 1898, it was the home of the school principals from 1889 to 1936 and the College presidents from 1936 to 1964. When Dr. Donald Tower retired as president of the College in 1964, the Alumni House became home to the College’s Department of English for 10 years. From the mid-seventies to mid-eighties, the structure held a variety of uses, serving as a faculty/staff dining facility and as office space for the alumni and development offices. In 1984, the state gave the title of the building to the Brockport Alumni Association (www.brockport.edu/alumni), which has maintained the house and made additional renovations.

“Alumni House serves the needs of our 70,000 alumni around the world, but it also is available for the members of our local community to rent and enjoy. We have hosted hundreds of events over the past decade, all of which contribute to the quality of life in our region,” said Andriatch.

The Alumni House is used for Brockport Alumni Association committee meetings, special events, College meetings and events as well as outside groups. Individuals or groups wishing to rent Alumni House for functions may contact the Office of Alumni Relations at (585) 395-2451 or visit www.brockport.edu/alumni.
