With balloons waving in the breeze, more than 150 guests, students, faculty and staff turned out on a perfect day to officially open the SUNY Brockport Townhome Residential Living Complex today, Wednesday, August 15.
President John R. Halstead thanked all who contributed to making the campus' new standard in campus living a reality. He also reminded the crowd that creating a quality environment for our students was the driving force behind the 52-apartment project that was completed in only 16 months.
"This project is the standard by which every other college residential complex should be judged. But it’s more than 'a project.' It is a residential village, a neighborhood that celebrates our community of students," he said.
Students will begin moving in Saturday, August 25.
Each of the 52 townhomes will be home to four students and features a full kitchen, dining room, living room, four bedrooms, two full baths and a washer and dryer. They also are fully furnished and equipped with Internet access, air conditioning, cable television and access to convenient parking.
Green/energy saving highlights of the project include the use of geothermal heat pumps for heating and cooling; a specialized insulation that is impervious to moisture and mold and exceeds R-value insulation requirements, and two storm-water ponds that will significantly reduce runoff into local streams and creeks.
The firm of Chaintreuil, Jensen and Stark of Buffalo, NY, was the project’s architects. Partner Robert Stark said that his goal to design something more than a housing complex has been met. “We are extremely pleased with the SUNY Brockport Townhome Project. The plan truly creates the neighborhood feel that we were striving for in the design. We have worked on many student housing projects on numerous campuses and the Brockport Townhome Project is, in our opinion, by far the most successful,” he said.
The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York partnered with the College to oversee design and construction. David D. Brown IV, Executive Director of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York said: "These townhomes will provide generations of Brockport students comfortable, state-of-the-art and environmentally sound accommodations. We look forward to again partnering with SUNY Brockport to help the College meet its future construction and residence hall needs."
Student and staff guided guests on tours of the complex following the formal ribbon cutting ceremony.
