The College at Brockport Celebrates Literacy with "Have a Heart. Give a Book. Campaign "
College to collect 1,300 new books and host story hours with "celebrity readers"
Maggie and Anna Hintz listen to President Halstead read "Clifford the Big Red Dog" during the College's "Have a heart. Give a book." campaign.
Brockport, NY — The College at Brockport’s second annual "Have a heart. Give a book. Campaign (HHGB)," which plans to place more than 1,300 new books into the hands of 1,300 children — from pre-K through grade 12 in Monroe and Orleans counties — has expanded its “Celebrity Reader” program.
The campaign runs through February 29, with faculty and students at the College, and the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center (REOC) and Brockport MetroCenter in downtown Rochester donating cash and purchasing books. The College’s Barnes & Noble Bookstore, which is stocking a number of books from the drive’s reading list, is offering the books for sale at discounted prices. Drop boxes will be available in offices across campus, in the College bookstore, at the REOC and MetroCenter, and at The Lift Bridge bookstore, Main Street, Brockport, for members of the community to participate in the campaign and give a book from the heart.
Joanna H. Kraus, The College at Brockport theatre professor emeritus, has donated her newest children’s book, A Night of Tamales and Roses.
The College’s Have a heart. Give a book. Campaign is partnering with the Rochester Education Foundation and their Give Back. Give Books. Campaign, which collects new books for children in Rochester City Schools. Brockport is the only area college or university that is participating on a campus-wide basis with the Rochester Education Foundation.
Because last year’s Have a heart. Give a Book. Campaign story hours were such a big hit with the entire campus and the children at the Brockport Child Development Center, the HHGB Committee decided to make available more story hours throughout this year’s campaign to the delight of the children… and the volunteer readers.
The campaign will welcome returning readers, including The College at Brockport President John and Mrs. Kathy Halstead, and new volunteers, including Virginia Campbell, director of marketing at the College, who will read her newly published book, Welcome to Cobblestone Square. Story hours will take place in the Seymour College Union Fireside Lounge and at the Brockport Child Development Center throughout the two-week campaign, with close to 20 readers taking part. Additional story hours may be added as the popularity of the event continues to grow throughout the campaign.
Please visit www.basc1.com for more information, to view the book list and print a donor form; or call the College Bookstore at 395-2554. The HHGB team, on behalf of the children in our region, thanks each and every one of you for your generosity!
