Criteria and Requirements

Scholarships for STEM Majors

Robert Noyce Scholarship are typically $10,000 per year. However, no teacher candidate may receive a scholarship for any year that exceeds the yearly cost of attendance at the College at Brockport (as defined in section 472 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1087ll).

Scholarship for undergraduate recipients must:

  1. be a U.S. citizen or national or permanent resident alien,
  2. be majoring in one of the following science disciplines: ESC, PHYS, CHEM, BIO or MATH at The College at Brockport and in the last two years of their baccalaureate degree program.
  3. have applied to, or have been accepted into the math or science teacher certification program in the Department of Education and Human Development.

It is expected that undergraduate Noyce Scholars will graduate with a science or mathematics major while maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.75 AND obtain teacher certification in ESC, PHYS, CHEM, BIO, or MATH.

Scholarship for graduate recipients must:

  1. be a U.S. citizen or national, or permanent resident alien,
  2. have an accredited BS in a science discipline in one of the following certification areas: ESC, PHYS, CHEM, BIO,or MATH.
  3. be accepted in the Alternate Teacher Certification Master’s Program in the Department of Education and Human Development OR the Certification Only Program.

Students enrolled in institutions requiring a fifth year or post-baccalaureate program for teacher certification may apply the scholarship to the post-baccalaureate program. A recipient may receive up to three years of scholarship support, beginning in the junior year and continuing through the post-baccalaureate study leading to certification. Part-time students may be eligible to receive pro-rated scholarships not to exceed 6 years of support.

Careers in Science or Math Teaching Requirement Post Certification:

Recipients of The Robert Noyce Scholarships at The College at Brockport must agree to commit to two years of teaching in a school district that has been designated as high-needs for each year a scholarship was received. Locally, these include such school districts as Batavia, Medina, Albion, RCSD, and Greece CSD, among others. For more information please contact pverones@brockport.edu.

Teaching Commitment:

The required teaching commitment must be completed within 8 years after graduation from the program for which the scholarship was awarded and must be performed in a high-need local educational agency* as defined in section 201 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1021):

*The term "high-need local educational agency" means a local educational agency that serves a middle or secondary school located in an area in which there is:

  1. A high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line;
  2. A high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which the teachers were trained to teach; or

Opportunities for Noyce Scholars to teach science and math exist in many school districts.  Locally, these districts have high-needs schools: Batavia, Medina, Albion, RCSD, and Greece.

Summer Internships for science and math majors:

As an additional component of the Robert Noyce Grant at The College at Brockport we offer internship scholarships, which fund a summer institute and stipend for awardees.  The summer institute at The College at Brockport will introduce students to early experiences in Computational Modeling pedagogy and provide examples of the integration of research into education. These internships will be structured to provide meaningful experiences for students with the goal of creating interest in science and math teaching as a career, thereby increasing the pool of highly qualified science and math teachers in high-needs schools.  Internships at The College at Brockport will include formal and informal Computational Modeling course work and additional relevant science and math education venues, such as summer science camps, summer school, science museums, nature centers, or science research laboratories. Summer student internship stipends are limited to $2,250.00.
