Paula Barbel, PhD, PNP, RN
Dr.Paula Barbel earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1998. She worked in biotechnology for two years before continuing her education and earning a second Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Rochester. Dr. Barbel continued her studies at the University of Rochester, earning her Master of Science in Nursing and her PhD in Health Practice Research.
Dr. Barbel began her nursing career working as an R.N. at the Golisano’s Children’s Hospital at Strong (GCH@S)in 2000. She began working at Starlight Pediatrics, formerly, Foster Care Pediatrics, in 2002 as a pediatric nurse practitioner caring exclusively for children and teens in foster care. In 2010, Dr. Barbel joined the faculty of the Department of Nursing here at the College at Brockport as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Nursing. She is now an Assistant Professor and continues to practice at Starlight Pediatrics and GCH@S.
Dr. Barbel’s research interests include child maltreatment, child abuse prevention, foster care and parenting. She has published articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as having presented locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Barbel continues to work and expand her program of research in the area of foster care and foster parenting.
Dr. Barbel is a member of several professional organizations including, Sigma Theta Tau International- Epsilon Xi chapter, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Chi Eta Phi Inc. , Beta Chi Chi chapter Inc. As a professor and clinical instructor, Dr. Barbel is very invested in student learning and incorporating active and fun learning methods.
