Department of Nursing Awards and Scholarships
Awardees selected by the Department of Nursing
Criteria:
- The student with the highest cumulative GPA for seven consecutive semesters at SUNY Brockport.
- The student must have exhibited excellent performance in the clinical setting for three semesters.
- This award is open to traditional students only.
Process: Identified by the Level III faculty.
Criteria:
- The student’s work in the clinical setting must be excellent.
- The student must be an active contributor to both departmental and professional activities.
- The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
- This award is open to both RN and traditional students.
Process: Recommended by the faculty Level III and awarded by the Department Nursing.
Criteria:
- Graduating adult student (age 25 or older).
- Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.
- Combined roles of parent, citizen and nursing student as demonstrated by activities such as:
- Involvement in children’s school activities such as PTSA, classroom activities, support groups for athletic teams, band boosters, etc.
- Involvement in community activities such as SNO, departmental activities, charitable fund raisers, citizen advisory groups, volunteer ambulance, Boards of Directors, church/synagogue activities, military reserves, etc.
- Outstanding clinical skills including knowledge/technical competence, communication skills and compassion.
Process: Recommended by the faculty Level III and awarded by the Department Nursing.
Criteria:
- Ten $3000 scholarships awarded yearly to junior, senior, or RN nursing students.
- Each applicant must demonstrate: financial need, a gpa of at least 3.0, and be in good standing in the nursing department
Process: Each potential nominee must write a letter detailing how they fulfill the requirements of the scholarship criteria and how the award will make a difference in their life. The letter is submitted to the Department Chair in mid-April.
The Department Chair verifies the GPA of each nominee. If there are more than 10 applicants, the chair will convene with the Level II & Level III Coordinators to determine the winners.
Criteria: Assist an outstanding student in the baccalaureate nursing program
Process:
- Letter of application to the Department secretary must address:
- Financial Need
- Co-curricular activities and/or service to the College and/or community
- Commitment to excellence in nursing
- Sound values and ethical principles
- What ethical values would you bring to the Profession of Nursing
- Two letters of reference must be submitted with the application addressing the applicant’s commitment to excellence in nursing and his/her participation in co-curicular activities and service to the College and/or community.
- Recommended by Level II Faculty and awarded by the Department of Nursing
Criteria:
- Be a full-time student
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
- Be seeking a BS in Nursing
- Must maintain a 2.75 overall GPA at the end of their freshman year if they are renewing the award
Process:
- Candidates apply by submitting a letter of application for the scholarship to the Department of Nursing. Three supportive letters of reference are required
- The Department of Nursing Selection Committee will select recipients based on the criteria above.
- The Department of Nursing will notify all applicants about their status by the scholarship deadline date set by the Financial Aid Office.
Criteria:
- GPA of at least 3.0 and completion of at least 40 credits at SUNY Brockport by April of the year of application.
- Assist a student in the nursing program that demonstrates commitment to and potential for excellence in the nursing profession.
Process:
- Letter to the Department secretary must address:
- Financial need
- Co-curricular activities and/or service to the College and/or community
- Commitment to excellence in nursing
- Sound values and ethical principles
- Recommended by Level II faculty and awarded by the Department of Nursing
Criteria:
- GPA of at least 3.0 and have completed at least 40 credits at SUNY Brockport by April of the year of application.
- Recognizes an outstanding junior in the nursing program
Process:
- Letter by applicant to the Department secretary must clearly address commitment to the nursing profession and sound values and ethical principles.
- Recommended by Level II faculty and awarded by the Department of Nursing
- Nominees selected by the Department of Nursing
Criteria:
- For demonstrating outstanding leadership and professionalism during the nursing education process by maintaining membership in a student nurses organization, participating in activities that foster a positive public image of nursing, participating in activities that foster high quality health care to consumers, and by engaging in volunteer activities of community service or support of non-profit health care organizations.
- To be eligible, the individual must not yet be a registered professional nurse and must be enrolled in a collegiate nursing program leading to RN licensure.
Process:
- Recommended by the faculty Level III and awarded by the Department Nursing.
- Nomination requires 2 letters of nomination and the nominee’s CV.
- Call for nominees is usually late March/April with about 3 weeks until the deadline.
- Award is made as part of the GVNA awards ceremony/dinner in mid-May.
- Special note: when a Brockport student wins, flowers from the faculty to the winner need to be brought to the awards dinner.
Criteria:
- Award is presented to three adult students from the Rochester Area Colleges Continuing Education Committee who have been especially successful at combining college studies with their other responsibilities.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
Process:
- Recommended by the faculty Level III and by the Department Nursing.
- The student needs to complete a biographical information form.
- Nomination form is usually due in late January/Early February.
- The award is presented at a dinner and ceremony of the Rochester Area Colleges Continuing Education Committee where the nominee represents the College.
Criteria:
- Award is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated academic excellence in a program in the school of Professions and who has made significant contributions to the College and/or Community through his/her involvement.
Process:
- Recommended by the faculty Level III and by the Department Nursing.
- Nomination is usually due in late January/Early February.
- The award is presented at a dinner and ceremony of the Rochester Area Colleges Continuing Education Committee where the nominee represents the College.
Criteria:
- Graduating seniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75
- Academic Achievement
- Record of extra-curricular activities and other contributions to the college and community.
- Evidence of Professional Promise
Process:
- Recommended by the faculty Level III and by the Department Nursing.
- Nomination is usually due in late January.
- Nomination packet requires a current vita/resume for the student and 3 separate letters of nomination by the faculty and/or professional staff.
- Nominations of exemplary students with a supporting statement and a list of their accomplishments needs to be sent to the Director of Scholarships.
- Finalists are interviewed by the Student Awards Committee prior to the selection of the winner by the president.
Criteria:
- The student is currently or has recently served in an elected or appointed position(s) of leadership in college recognized clubs, organizations or campus governance. In those positions, the student: has excelled in the normal responsibilities as defined for the positions held or has shown extraordinary leadership beyond the normal responsibilities as defined for the positions held AND/OR
- The student is or has been a leader of students involved in campus-related services or other activities (other than those listed in #1 above), which have been of significant benefit to the College and/or Brockport Community.
Process:
- A nomination form is required which includes a narrative.
- Student completes an application form.
- Both forms and 2 letters of recommendation are submitted to the Office of Leadership and Community Development.
- Nomination packet is usually due in very early March.
Criteria:
- Demonstrates excellence in the classroom as well in the clinical site.
- Shows active involvement in extracurricular activities.
Process: Senior faculty will review senior applicants for a nominee, and then will suggest this person to the entire faculty for review. Application form from the Army needs to be completed.
Criteria:
- Junior or Senior nursing student in excellent academic standing
