Office for Students with Disabilities
Services Provided
The Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affair's Office for Students with Disabilities provides support and assistance to students with medical, physical, emotional or learning disabilities, especially those experiencing problems in areas such as academic program, career choice, or adjustment to the college experience and campus environment. Among the services provided are those related to accessibility of campus facilities, individual and group counseling, reasonable classroom accommodations (i.e., extended testing times, alternate test location), advocacy for student needs, referral to appropriate governmental and community agencies, and arrangements for notetakers, readers, and interpreters.
The Coordinator of OSD serves in an advisory capacity to the campus-at-large on matters related to students with disabilities and works closely with other student services to ensure that the needs of disabled students are met.
Notetakers
Students requiring notetakers must submit a copy of their course schedules to OSD at least three weeks prior to the beginning of every semester. Returning students are strongly encouraged to submit this information immediately following registration. Courses requiring notetakers should be identified on the schedule.
Students wishing to have class notes delivered to the OSD office are advised to pick them up weekly. If, after two weeks, class notes have not been picked up, a review will take place assessing the continued need for a notetaker.
Oral and Sign Language Interpreters
If you have a hearing disability and are sponsored by VESID, interpreters' costs are paid for by that agency. If you are ineligible for VESID sponsorship, your interpreters are chosen and paid for by the College. Interpreters can also be provided for campus events. Students who use this service must notify OSD at least 24 hours prior to any anticipated absences, so that we may avoid paying for unused services.
Tape-Recorded Lectures
Students requiring this service will use their own tape recorders. To protect original lecture material, students may be required to complete a Student Agreement for Taping Lectures. This agreement protects original faculty material from being published.

Applications for services from both these organizations are available in OSD.
Only in instances where neither of the resources named above can provide the books on tape as needed, OSD will record the books onto tape. A minimum four-week notice is required for OSD to begin taping any book. All requests for books on tape should be either in writing or dictated on a cassette tape. Requests should include the title, author(s) and edition of the book needed. Sometimes, an entire book is not required for the class. We suggest asking the instructor of the course for a copy of the syllabus or a list of chapters needing to be taped.
OSD expects all books taped by the office to be returned at the end of the semester in which they are used. Books on tape are viewed as library books and are often used by other students. Books on tape that are not returned, will result in a charge equivalent to the cost for recording ($10/tape). If any tape(s) is/are not returned and the charge is unpaid, the Bursar's Office will place a block on against your student record.
