| Dr. Susan Petersen, department chair |
Hi! Welcome to the second annual Department of
Physical Education and Sport e-newsletter!
This is an exciting time for our
department and we would like to keep our students,
alumni, friends and emeriti faculty and staff up to
date on departmental events. We had a very good
response to our last e-newsletter and re-established
connections with former students and faculty as a
result.
The newsletter is divided into several sections, one for each of the concentrations - athletic training, exercise physiology, physical education teacher certification, adapted physical education, and sport management. Each section contains news of some unique happenings in that area. |

Dr. Winnick's grant is just one of two grants in the field of adapted physical education funded by the Department of Education nationwide. These are very exciting times in the exercise
physiology concentration. A new exercise physiology
major has been approved by the campus
and now awaits approval by SUNY Central. Our new
3+3 DPT (doctorate in physical
therapy) program began this semester and we are
very excited about this collaboration with Upstate
Medical Center.

The 2005-2006 year was one marked with many
successes by students and faculty.
Recent SUNY Brockport graduates are working in the field including Gregg Pastore, director of the Web site for the Buffalo Bills works with fellow Brockport alumni Robert Schatz and Ron Croce . Scott Bihl is zone sales manager with the Buffalo Sabres and Adam Winslow is group sales manager for the Rochester Americans and Rochester Knighthawks. He's joined by fellow SUNY Brockport grad Stephen Samoyedny. Paul McComb is executive administrator at the YMCA in Pittsburgh, PA; Will Rumbold is VP of Community Baseball (better known as the Rochester Red Wings) and Chris Palin is VP at the Rochester Americans Hockey Club. We've also heard from Becky Melfi who accepted a position as assistant lacrosse coach at St. Vincent College in PA and has her eye on becoming head coach in the near future. We're proud to call them Brockport alumni! Let us hear from you as well! |

The Athletic Training Program is looking forward
to another exciting year in 2006-2007. We accepted
15 new students into our program
this fall, which brings our total
to 35 - our highest enrollment!
We're pleased to report that the Athletic Training Room is no longer 120 degrees on a daily basis. In April we installed a new air conditioning and ventilation system. This made a significant difference especially during pre-season. Two interns from spring semester have been hired at their internship sites: Paul Torcello at Midtown Athletic Club in Rochester and Katie Schweinfurth at Advantage Sports Performance in Gates, NY. We hope that all of you are doing well in your chosen careers and we would love to hear from any and all of you! |

A big autumn welcome from the teacher education
concentration in the Department of Physical
Education and Sport. It?s been an eventful fall
with a number of exciting developments to report.
To begin, two of our professors, Dr. Luz Cruz and Dr. Cathy Houston-Wilson, will be receiving Amazing Person awards at the upcoming New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Education and Dance (NYS AHPERD) conference this month. It's an extremely prestigious award and we are proud of their excellent work. In addition, a number of our faculty and students will be presenting educational sessions. We will have a great-looking booth and would love to have alumni stop by and chat! Finally, we welcome Ms. Jean Berry. Jean has done excellent work supervising student teachers over the past seven years and, as of September, has new responsibilities. Each year, the department hires a number of graduate students to teach some of our activities courses. With the hiring of Jean, we're able to provide these graduate students with ongoing mentoring from a highly skilled professional. |
