Athletic Training

As most of you may know, the NATA implemented drastic education reforms over the last five years and this has necessitated many changes to the athletic training program as you may have known it. One of the major changes was the emphasis on "clinical education." The clinical experience aspect of the program is much more formal and requires that all students be directly supervised by an ATC at all times. This has been a huge issue for all accredited programs. However, for us, it was actually a blessing as we obtained approval to add a full-time ATC position beginning in fall 2005. We are very pleased to announce that we have hired Mr. John Jackson, ATC, PTA, a 1987 graduate of our program. John has spent the last several years at Spencerport Physical Therapy and joined our program at the beginning of the fall semester.

Another exciting development for our program is the move to make athletic training a stand-alone major. We have received departmental approval to form an athletic training major within the Department of Physical Education and Sport. The proposal will be submitted this year for campus approval with submission to Albany expected in 2006. We are excited about this major and expect that it will make our program more attractive to potential students. We are targeting fall 2007 for implementation.

As our faculty has grown this year, a couple of our long-time faculty have celebrated some milestones. Assistant Athletic Trainer/Instructor Sue Wielgosz completed 20 years at SUNY Brockport and Head Athletic Trainer/Instructor Lee Cohen will celebrate his 20 th year in the program in spring 2006. Assistant Athletic Trainer/Instructor Mike Militello is currently in his 12 th year at Brockport, and the Athletic Training Program Director Dr. Tim Henry is currently in his 9 th year. We congratulate them all!

Our greatest strength is the quality of students currently enrolled in our program. The 27 students currently in the athletic training concentration have a mean GPA of 3.37 and each has the potential to be great athletic trainers. It is a pleasure to deal with these fine individuals every day.

Finally, we hope that all of our graduates are doing well and succeeding in their chosen professions. We would love to hear from you!
