Exercise Physiology

We are excited to announce that SUNY Brockport has entered a 3+3 collaboration with Upstate Medical University , which offers SUNY Brockport students the opportunity to acquire a doctorate in physical therapy in just six years.

One of the three recommended majors of study at SUNY Brockport for students to pursue the 3+3 program is a degree in physical education with a concentration in exercise physiology. The 3+3 doctorate of physical therapy program, which begins fall 2006, allows students to complete the first three years of study at SUNY Brockport and to then transfer to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse for the final three years of the program.

Research

Both exercise physiologists in the Department of Physical Education and Sport, Dr. Craig O. Mattern and Dr. Heidi K. Byrne, are serving as exercise consultants for Rochester Clinical Research. This is a research laboratory located in Rochester that specializes in collecting data for clinical drug trials. In this new role, Dr. Mattern and Dr. Byrne are currently developing experiments which will investigate the synergistic effects of drug therapy and aerobic exercise for obese adults. To learn more about Rochester Clinical research, please go to http://www.rcrclinical.com.

Accreditation

In April 2004 the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences was formed to develop the first and only accreditation available for colleges and universities offering a degree in exercise physiology. Our faculty are working to make SUNY Brockport one of the first programs in New York to receive this highly sought after accreditation. Once acquired, this accreditation will further enhance the marketability of students graduating from our program. For more information on this accreditation please go to http://www.coaes.org.
