P-12 Teacher Education

We maintain high standards as students move through the program and are ready to assume the rigors of student teaching and beyond. We thank all of our alumni and your colleagues who continue to support our program by hosting field experience students as well as student teachers. If you have tenure and are interested in working with our students please drop me a line at chouston@brockport.edu . Field experience students need to be placed around the Rochester/Buffalo area while student teachers may be placed anywhere in New York.

Soon the NYS-AHPERD Conference will be upon us. We are excited that the conference will be held in Rochester again this year. The dates for the conference are November 9-12. If you are not currently a member of NYS-AHPERD, please consider joining and attending the conference. You will see that SUNY Brockport is well represented at the conference. For information related to becoming a member and/or registering for the conference, please visit the NYS-AHPERD Web site at www.nysahperd.org . This year, two students from our department will be recognized as Majors of the Year. The winners are Amy Bielunis and Christopher Dahlem. Ms. Bielunis also won the prestigious JB Nash Award. This is the highest honor any student can win in NYS and we are very proud of Amy and her accomplishments.

Our students are also actively involved in service related groups. The PE Majors Club continues to host the Haunted House during the Brockport Halloween Parade night and raise funds for various charities. This year the group is sponsoring a Hurricane Katrina-displaced family from New Orleans. Phi Epsilon Kappa, the National Honor Society for Physical Education will host "Friday Night Flip Out" for elementary school children. Proceeds support Camp Abilities, a developmental sports camp for students who are blind and visually impaired.

Please share with us your stories, accomplishments and achievements by sending them to Cathy Houston-Wilson (chouston@brockport.edu). We'll post them on subsequent newsletters!
