Dr. Susan Petersen's Message

The newsletter is divided into sections, one for each of the concentrations: athletic training, exercise physiology, physical education/teacher certification, adapted physical education and sport management. We'll also devote one section specifically to emeriti faculty and staff.

Before you explore your area of interest, let me tell you about some of the highlights and changes going on department wide.

  1. We have some new faces in the department and some "old" faces in new roles this year. First, Dr. Francis X. Short , long-time Chair of the Department of PES is now the Dean of the School of Arts and Performance. As you can tell from the fact that I'm writing this portion of the newsletter, I have moved into the Chair's position. I am incredibly proud to be the chair of such a wonderful department.
  2. We have three new faculty members this year. Dr. Rikki Cannioto teaches assessment, fitness for healthy living, data analysis and synthesis. Dr. Peter Hager teaches sport philosophy, sport ethics and significance of physical activity. Dr. Pam Haibach recently graduated from Penn State University and teaches skill acquisition. You can read more about our faculty by clicking on http://www.brockport.edu/pes.
  3. The Department of Physical Education and Sport plans major changes to our curriculum. In an effort to become the best department of our kind in the country, we will revise the current liberal arts major in physical education to a major in kinesiology. We will then have separate majors in kinesiology, physical education (with an option for a minor in adapted physical education), athletic training, exercise physiology and sport management. This change will eliminate "concentrations" and allow each new major the flexibility to pursue the best possible curricula as we pursue various national accreditations while also marketing to a wider range of students.

As you can see, we're headed for another exciting year in the department. I invite you to read the sections that follow and see what's going on in each of the current concentrations and with the Dean's new committee on emeriti relations. I also encourage you to explore our Web site. Dr. Reggie Ocansey does a terrific job updating the Web site and adding lots of great links to it.

In future newsletters, we'd like to highlight some of our most successful "friends" of the department, so if you have news of a particular student, former student, alumni, or emeriti faculty or staff, please let us know at mailto:speterse@brockport.edu. We'd love to hear from you. Enjoy the rest of the newsletter!
