Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education (KSSPE)

The Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education offers a degree program that leads to a Bachelor of Science (BS) with a major in Athletic Training, a career US News & World Report recently named one of the 50 Best Careers for 2011.

Athletic Training is an allied health profession dealing with the prevention, recognition, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is a highly qualified health-care professional educated and skilled in the art and science of athletic health care. ATCs typically work in a variety of settings, including colleges and universities, professional teams, high schools, and sports medicine clinics. The ATC has become a vital part of the sports medicine team and is widely recognized as a health-care professional.

The undergraduate Athletic Training Major at The College at Brockport is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Graduates are also eligible for licensure in New York State as a Certified Athletic Trainer. The program is structured to provide a rigorous plan of study to include both academic and clinical education experiences. Students rotate through on-campus athletic training facilities and several off-site affiliated settings during their clinical education, acquiring valuable clinical skills under the direct supervision of certified athletic training staff in a variety of clinical experience settings. Upon successful completion of the four-year baccalaureate degree, students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification, Inc. certification examination. The Athletic Training Major at the College is supervised by five Certified Athletic Trainers all of whom have teaching and clinical responsibilities.

Graduates from the Athletic Training Program at Brockport are currently working in many different settings across the country including colleges and universities, professional sport teams, high schools, sports medicine clinics, and many others.  In a typical graduating class, approximately 75% of the graduating students attend graduate school while approximately 25% pursue employment in the field.
