Athletic Training: Admission

Admission into the Athletic Training Concentration is competitive and requires formal application(refer to Athletic Training Web Site for the most current admission criteria).Athletic Training Room Photo Showing Exercise Equipment for Rehabilitation. The application process occurs in the Spring semester of each academic year. Students may apply to the Athletic Training Concentration if they are enrolled in or have completed PES 385 Basic Athletic Training and BIO 221 Survey of Anatomy and Physiology. Current certification in First Aid and CPR must also be demonstrated prior to admission. .

The following must be completed prior to admission:

  1. Application for admission to Athletic Training Concentration
  2. Copies of all previous transcripts:
    • Freshmen send high school and all college transcripts
    • Transfers send all college transcripts
  3. Provide two letters of recommendation from former or present supervising athletic trainers, team physicians, instructors, coaches, etc.
  4. Must possess a current G.P.A. of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale
  5. Must have attained a grade of "C" or better in all courses required for Athletic Training
    • ** **Students will not be allowed to progress to the next course in the Athletic Training sequence until a grade of "C" or better is attained
  6. Documentation of fulfillment of the Technical Standards for Athletic Training
  7. After completion of 1-7, interview with Athletic Training Staff
    • * During the interview the Athletic Training Staff will be considering the following factors:
      • * Motivation
      • * Enthusiasm for Athletic Training
      • * Established professional goals
      • * Confidence
      • * Good academic ability
      • * Good study habits
      • * Professional appearance
      • * Reliability
      • * Understanding of the time commitment to Athletic Training
      • * Initiative

***Following formal acceptance into the program the following will be required:

* Proof of completion of physical examination and compliance with all immunization requirements

Competitive Admission Procedures:

The Athletic Training Concentration accepts students on a competitive selection process based upon the number of clinical experience spots available. In the event that the number of applicants exceeds the availability of openings for admission, the following criteria will be used as a selective admissions process. Applicants will be ranked on the following:

  • Cumulative GPA (2.5 minimum/4.0)
  • Final grades in PES 385 and BIO 221 or BIO 321
  • Final grades in other Athletic Training related coursework:
    • PES 411, PEP 356, PES 325, PES 335, HLS 311
  • Personal interview

Admission into the concentration will be based upon the composite ranking of the criteria listed above. The students with the highest rankings will be admitted into the concentration until all available spots have been filled. The number of students admitted into the concentration will vary by year based upon the number of graduating and returning students. The Athletic Training Concentration Director has the final authority on all admissions decisions. The Athletic Training Concentration reserves the right to not fill all available spots if the Athletic Training Staff does not feel that there are enough minimally qualified candidates in any given year.

If not selected into the concentration, students may reapply the following year. There is no limit on the number of times an applicant may apply to the Athletic Training Concentration.

Transfer Policy:

Students transferring into The College at Brockport who wish to apply to the Athletic Training Education Program must follow the same application procedures as native students. All students must complete PES 385 Basic Athletic Training at The College at Brockport prior to applying to the Athletic Training Education Program. Transfer students may transfer an Anatomy and Physiology course that is deemed by admissions as equivalent to BIO 221 Survey of Anatomy & Physiology or BIO 321 Anatomy & Physiology I. Transfer students should plan on completing a minimum of five semesters at The College at Brockport in order to complete the Athletic Training Education Program.

Retention in Program:

To be retained in the Athletic Training Concentration, students must:

  1. Complete all required coursework with a grade of “C” or better
    **Students will not be allowed to progress to the next course in the Athletic Training sequence until a grade of “C” or better is attained
  2. Complete required clinical experiences (four consecutive semesters)
    **All clinical proficiencies associated with each semester of clinical experiences must be completed in order to progress to the next clinical experience course
  3. Complete required competencies and clinical proficiencies
  4. Compliance with technical standards and immunization requirements (see Athletic Training Web site)
  5. Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the Athletic Training Handbook
  6. Adhere to regulations governing the practice of Athletic Training in New York State (Article 162, Section 8350)(Appendix B)
  7. Adhere to National Athletic Trainers’ Association Code of Ethics (Appendix C)
  8. Maintain certification in First Aid and CPR/AED.

**Failure to comply with the above criteria will result in dismissal from the Athletic Training Program.
