Philosophy trains your mind to think critically and analytically about the nature and value of human existence. Philosophy considers such questions as:

  • Does God exist?
  • Do I have a soul ?
  • Is there a real difference between right and wrong?
  • Am I free to make genuine choices in my life?
  • What is a good life ?
  • What is justice ?
  • Is it ethical to eat animals?
  • What gives governments the authority to make laws?
  • What is art?

Philosophy emphasizes problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. So, philosophy is useful whether you choose to take one course, a few, or go on to major. Philosophy majors work in a variety of different fields -- law, education, information and computer technology, business, journalism, psychology, ministry, health care, etc. Their sharpened thinking skills come in handy no matter what profession they choose. The Department of Philosophy at SUNY Brockport has a small but dedicated faculty. We offer courses in all areas of philosophy, including a general introductory course (PHL 101) each semester. Topics in this course may include: God, free will, reality and mind. We also offer other introductory courses in critical thinking, logic, ethics, and philosophy of religion. We regularly offer upper-division courses in political philosophy, medical ethics, Asian philosophy, Ancient Greek philosophy, modern philosophy, and other areas.

The department sponsors the Center for Philosophic Exchange, a premier lecture series which brings first-rate philosophers to SUNY Brockport. The Center for Philosophic Exchange generally meets four times in the fall semester. Past topics include: Atheism and ethics, medical definitions of death, aesthetics and the environment, and teaching evolution in public schools. The Center for Philosophic Exchange lectures take place on Thursday afternoons, from 4:30-6pm and Friday mornings, from 9:30-11:00am in Seymour Union. Talks are free and open to the public. The department also publishes the journal Philosophic Exchange in connection with this series.

The Department of Philosophy is located on the first floor of Hartwell Hall. (One floor up from the ground floor.) If you are interested in what philosophy is, come on by. The Mind's Eye is The College at Brockport's undergraduate philosophy journal. It is entirely student-edited and publishes papers by Brockport students on topics in any area of philosophy. If you would like to submit a paper to the journal, contact the faculty supervisor, Dr. Ponesse at jponesse@brockport.edu.
