Requirements for International Studies Majors

Introductory Course Work (18 Credits)

International studies majors must complete four of the following eight courses. In addition, they must complete two additional introductory courses selected with the advisement and approval of the chairperson. 
ANT 100 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
COM 418 Cross-cultural Communication
ESC 102 Elements of Geography  
or
  PLS 475 Political Geography
ECN 202 Principles of Macro Economics
ENL 164 Intro to World Literature  
or  ENL 165 International Fiction
HST 102 The Modern World
PLS 111 World Politics
PLS 112 Foreign Governments
SOC 306
Social Changes in the Third World  
or  PLS 364 Politics of Developing Countries

 

Upper-division Track (18 Credits)

International studies majors must complete one of the following three upper-division course-work tracks: 

  • Students choosing this track must complete 18 credits of upper-division course work pertaining to one of the following geographical areas. Courses must be selected in consultation with the chairperson. 
    • Africa 
    • Asia 
    • Canada 
    • Europe 
    • Latin America 
    • International Business 

  • Multi-regional Studies Track

  • International studies majors choosing this option select six courses with the advisement and approval of the program director. These include three courses, each of which is related to a different one of the geographical areas listed above, and three courses that are related to a fourth area. 

  • Environment Track

  • Students opting for this track must complete six upper-division courses which focus on various manifestations of global interdependence. Four of the six courses must be from the following list, and two must be selected in consultation with the program director.

Foreign Language Requirement

Majors must demonstrate competence in an appropriate foreign language, approved by the program director, by completing the second half of an intermediate language course (or a more advanced course), or by taking a qualifying examination. Completion of a third year of language is strongly recommended.
