NY-Alert: A SUNY-Wide Emergency Notification System

The College at Brockport is a part of the SUNY-wide Emergency Notification System called NY-Alert. Upon receipt of an emergency message, this system provides emergency updates and other important information to your phone, fax or email. Signing up for this service is free of charge and well worth the investment. All members of our community are encouraged to enroll for these notifications.

Upon enrolling for this service, you will be guaranteed a minimum of two messages per year. The College is committed to testing the NY-Alert System, along with all other forms of Emergency Communications every semester to ensure operability and familiarization to those who have enrolled. When testing, enrollees will receive a message stating that it is "test" of the system.

  • What Is NY-Alert?

    The College at Brockport participates in the SUNY-wide NY-Alert emergency messaging system. This system was created to notify all campus members of emergency situations that could impact the safety and wellbeing of the campus community.

  • How Do I Enroll For NY-Alert?

    To enroll today, click here. For students, in order to affirm your registration a screen will first appear prompting your optional enrollment in the NY-Alert emergency messaging system. This screen will only appear when you must affirm your enrollment each semester. Therefore, each semester you must choose to enroll, not enroll or update your existing information. Should you not be enrolled in classes for the current term or if you have separated from the college, your contact information is voided and you will not be contacted in a campus emergency. Upon re-enrollment or are re-employed by the College, your contact information shall be reactivated within one week.

  • What Information Will I Have To Provide If I Enroll?

    Should you choose to enroll in the NY-Alert emergency messaging system, you will be required to provide a minimum of one valid email address. Other notification options are optional and include:

    • Cell phone number and provider to receive text message alerts
    • Telephone number (cell or landline) to receive voice message alerts

    Once enrolled, you have the capability to provide three numbers for each application you choose. Please remember that the NY-Alert system, once activated, will contact all avenues of notification you have chosen.

    NY-Alert officials recommend listing only your most utilized numbers for this application.

  • When Can I Expect My Information To Be Accepted Into The NY-Alert System?

    There is a slight delay between the time when you submit your contact information and when it is physically updated into the NY-Alert database. Your information should be active after one week of completing enrollment.

  • In What Situations Might I Receive A NY-Alert Notification?

    An emergency message will be sent from the Campus in any situation where the health and/or safety of The College at Brockport community is in question. Such situations would include:

    • Bomb Threats (based on intelligence that indicates the threat is credible)

    • Civil Disturbance (large group that disrupts normal campus operations/activities)

    • Fire (large-scale fire to building(s), wildfires, local community or industry fires that could potentially impact the campus)

    • Hazardous Material Exposure (dangerous material, chemical, biological, nuclear)
    • Major Road Closing/Traffic Incident (unanticipated event(s) that would disrupt the safe passage to and away from campus)

    • Medical Emergency (pandemic or an event with mass casualties)

    • Personal Safety (situations that include the use of weapons, violence, active shooters, perpetrator(s) at large, hostage situations or missing person)

    • Suspicious Package (reasonable belief that a package received may contain chemical, biological or nuclear substances that would cause harm to people or property)

    • Utility Failure (a major disruption or damage to utilities including gas, water and electric)

    • Weather Related Issues (severe weather conditions to include: flooding, snow, ice, extreme cold, thunderstorms, high winds, tornado or hurricane)

  • How Can Others Sign Up?

    Currently, only members of the College community with access to the Campus Information System (Banner), can sign up for emergency notifications via NY-Alert. These members include: current students, faculty and staff, employees of affiliated organizations such as the Brockport Auxiliary Service Corporation, the Research Foundation and the Brockport Child Development Center.

    College community members that are enrolled in NY-Alert do have the capability to provide parent, guardian, spouse, or other(s) as their secondary contact information if they wish.

  • Where Can I Learn More About NY-Alert?

    NY-Alert is a collaborative system between the State University of New York (SUNY) and the State Emergency Management Office. More information regarding NY-Alert can be found at this website.

  • NY-Alert Data Privacy

    The NY-Alert system is designed to alert you in cases where your personal safety may be at risk. For this reason, it is critical that Brockport/NY-Alert has your contact information that is utilized on a regular basis. Please be assured that the data you provide will not be used for any other purpose or database.

    To provide for an easier SUNY NY-Alert registration process, this enrollment application will optionally copy data from the Banner Student system. This is only offered during the initial data entry process as a convenience and the data will not be used to update Banner. If you wish to correct contact information within Banner, use the Personal Information Menu within Banner Self-Service to do this.

    The data you provide will be sent to the State Emergency Management Office by SUNY System Administration. It will be sent to no other third parties, public or private. You will be able to alter your data at any time on the Banner Self-Service Personal Information menu including the option to remove yourself from the system. Data is transmitted weekly so registration and data changes can take up to seven days to alter the alert system.

    The College at Brockport considers this data as critical and strongly encourages your participation. You will be able to enroll at any time using the Personal Information Menu in Banner Self-Service. You will be prompted at the beginning of each semester to confirm your decision regarding participation and offered an opportunity to update your personal contact data.

    By submitting contact information you are providing your consent for disclosure of this information to both SUNY System Administration and to the State Emergency Management Office.

While in the event of an emergency, The College at Brockport will make every effort to reach all students and staff through the contact information they have submitted to the NY-Alert system. The College at Brockport acknowledges that technical limitations such as overtaxed communications systems, transmission errors, and cellular telephone roaming and out of range areas, as well as human delays in issuing emergency messages may limit the effectiveness of the system and delay or prevent the issuance or receipt of messages to all or certain users.

The College at Brockport will make every effort to inform all users of an emergency in a timely and appropriate manner however cannot guarantee performance of the system and disclaims liability for messages delayed or not received due to technological limitations or human error.
