What to Do in Case of an Emergency

Should the unthinkable happen on campus, this is what you should do to keep yourself safe.

  1. Find someplace safe and stay there. Do not enter a scene to assist those in danger. If you are safe where you are: in your residence hall room, in class, in Seymour College Union, in Drake Memorial Library, etc., you should stay there. If you must leave a safe place during an active emergency situation, tell someone in charge, and let them know where you are going.
  2. Report the situtation to University Police, x2222, when it is safe to do so. College officials need to know about an incident in order to properly respond to it. However, your first priority is your own safety. If you are reporting an incident, be sure to stay on the line until all questions have been answered.
  3. Stay informed and follow instructions. Listen to the person in charge of the area where you are. News may be conveyed in person, by SUNY NY Alert, or the College's Web site.
  4. Check in. On-campus students should check in with their Resident Assistants or Resident Directors, once it is safe to do so. Off-campus students, if on campus, should check in at Seymour College Union or another location as instructed. Faculty and staff should contact their department chair or unit head.
  5. Stay calm. Under stress, we all get excited. It is a natural reaction. However, your safety may depend on staying calm and following instructions.
