Teacher and Professional
Certification Information
The College at Brockport has a range of programs approved by the Regents of New York and the New York State Education Department. Individuals completing the requirements at SUNY Brockport for initial certification, professional certification, permanent certification, extensions and annotations may begin the certification process through the Office of Certification located in the Albert W. Brown Building, Rooms 254 and 265.
Undergraduate teacher candidates will complete a local application for certification during the student teaching phase of their program. The local application will be mailed to students in programs leading to the Master of Science in Education or Certificate of Advance Study. Upon review of the local application, and a determination that the candidate meets the requirements of the certificate, the Office of Certification will send an institutional recommendation to the NYSED on behalf of the student candidate for certification.
The Office of Certification will send each candidate a letter informing him or her when to apply for certification. Because every teacher certification candidate at SUNY College at Brockport will be completing the teacher preparation pathway, it is imperative that the student follow application instructions.
Requirements for teaching certifications in NYS may be found on the NYSED website at
http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/index.html
Please note, transcript evaluations for prior credit will be completed only for students admitted to the graduate education programs at SUNY College at Brockport. No undergraduate credit will be applied towards a graduate program.
General questions regarding admission to the College should be directed to either the Office of Undergraduate Admissions or the Office of Graduate Studies.

Additional Classroom Teacher Certification in Students with Disabilities (B-2, 1-6, or 7-12)
The academic requirements of this certificate are not structured as an option within the teacher preparation programs offered by The College at Brockport, therefore, the Office of Certification cannot assist you with your application.
The New York State Department of Education (NYSED) allows teachers holding valid certificates in B-2, 1-6 or 7-12 to add an additional certificate in classroom teaching in the area of Students With Disabilities upon successful completion of 12 hours of additional coursework, and successful completion of the Content Specialty Test (CST) in Students With Disabilities.
Candidates applying for the additional SWD certification must hold a valid provisional or initial certificate in another title area in grades B-2, 1 -6, or 7-12. Teachers holding certificates in K-12 or PreK-12 areas are not eligible for the additional certificate.
The state has specific coursework requirements, and candidates must take the following coursework:
- A foundation (introduction) of special education course
- A special education methods course
- A special education assessment course
- ONE special education elective
The College at Brockport offers courses to meet the requirements in the following areas: EDI 413/513 Introduction to Special Education, EDI 414/514 Methods in Special Education, and EDI 419/519 Assessment in Special Education. Primary consideration is given to Brockport students enrolled in the Department of Education and Human Development Inclusive Education Programs who require the courses for their degree programs. All others (both matriculated and non-matriculated students) are offered placements on a space-available basis.

To apply for the certificate on TEACH, choose Classroom Teacher, Students With Disabilities, your appropriate Grade Level, Students With Disabilities (appropriate grade level), and Initial Certificate. Click Search. Scroll down to the Pathway: Individual Evaluation for Additional Classroom Teaching Certificate. This is the certificate for which you will be applying.
Thoroughly review the requirements to be certain that you meet them. NYSED will not issue a certificate until every requirement is met. These applications are manually reviewed at the state level, and it may be several weeks or months before you receive your certificate.
Should you be uncertain whether a course you are considering will meet the elective requirement, please contact your local BOCES office.
