I want to thank all of you who responded to the ANGEL survey we conducted last semester on our course offerings. We had 88 responses to the survey, and the full results of the survey are available here. It is clear that many of you want more core courses offered in the summer, and more online and hybrid/blended courses.
So, we will be offering additional courses this summer: Financial Management (PAD 640); Budget-State and Local Government (PAD/EPS 684); and Negotiations and Conflict Management (PAD 612), in addition to Legal Aspects of Public Administration (PAD 622), Ethics in Administration (PAD 653), and Project Paper/Portfolio Seminar (PAD/EPS 696). And, as the campus moves in the direction of supporting hybrid courses (courses involving reduced face-to-face classroom time, and online learning), we intend to take advantage of offering those kinds of courses. (Click here to see our course offerings.)
Offering new electives is more challenging. Due to campus budgetary constraints, it can be difficult to offer new electives, if that means hiring an additional adjunct. On the other hand, it is much less difficult if a faculty member wishes to drop a current elective, and instead offer another elective.
I also want you to know that we are offering two certificate programs: one in Nonprofit Management and one in Arts Administration (in conjunction with the Visual Studies Workshop MFA degree.) Information about both certificates will be available on our web site.
We are expecting approval for a new emphasis in nonprofit management that we expect to be in place by spring 2009.
So, again, thank you for your feedback. We value it. And, we want your MPA experience to be a valuable one for you.

Ed Downey's article "A Conceptual Framework for Considering the Value of E-Government," originally published in the Encyclopedia of Digital Government, was selected for publication as a chapter in Government: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools and Applications to be published in 2008. This is a six-volume set that is a part of IGI Global's Contemporary Research in Information Science and Technology Series and is described as including "the most dependable, exhaustive research on the subject."
Jim Fatula was a guest speaker on WXXI-AM 1370's Connection with Bob Smith on November 30, 2007. The topic was rising health care premiums
Fatula's discussion paper, NASPAA's Five-Faculty Rule, has been posted on NASPAA's "Standards 2009" web site. The paper was prepared at the request of NASPAA as part of the overall preparation for the articulation of new accreditation standards to be decided on in 2009. The purpose of this working paper is to summarize the rationale for and the arguments against the “five faculty rule” in NASPAA’s Accreditation Standard 5.1 in the context of NASPAA’s other standards, and in the context of the current revision of its accreditation standards to spur discussion about the advisability of continuing the five faculty rule as an accreditation standard. - Preparing for submission to the Journal of International Fire Service Leadership and Management, "Informal Policy Mandates in the Fire Service."
- Preparing for submission to Police Quarterly, "Effects of Agency Size and Type on Formal Organization Structure."
- Presenting in March 2008 at Academy of Criminal Justice and Sciences in Cincinnati, "Police Administration after the Millennium."

Faith Prather conducted a three-part lecture series, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity at St. John Fisher College based on the College’s summer book selection: MicroMessaging by Stephen Young (January 30, January 31 and March 6, 2008). Drawing on personal insights and real-life teaching dilemmas, the lecture series examined the benefits and challenges of "micromessaging" as a best practice in building an inclusive classroom.
