How and why did you decide to apply for The College at Brockport MPA program?
As a public affairs professional with experience in both the non-profit and government sectors, my career aspirations have always been to become a policy advisor or advocate. In my experience, it became clear that a master’s degree was essential to reach my career goals. I chose Brockport's program because it is the one college in the Rochester community that offers an MPA accredited by NASPAA. The MPA is such a diverse degree providing a comprehensive background to government, nonprofit, and healthcare administration; it was the best fit. Also, as a Canadian looking to expand my experience in the Rochester area, the MPA at Brockport offered a comprehensive accredited program that would allow me to not only enhance my professional skills through practical courses, but also provide for valuable networking opportunities in the area.
What have you enjoyed most about the program so far?
My favorite part of the program has been the opportunity to meet my fellow students and network with alumni. The wealth of knowledge that each person brings to the classroom have allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of not only the theoretical foundation of public administration, but also the practical application of the material. Additionally, the Department’s outreach activities and networking events have provided me with valuable opportunities to network and meet community partners. The bi-annual events at Victoire, and the Public Administration open house at the MetroCenter are excellent opportunities for students to learn more about where alumni are in the community today. I greatly have appreciated the multiple opportunities to expand my professional network throughout the program.
What does your job entail?
I am currently the Graduate Assistant for the Department of Public Administration. During the past year I have done everything from stakeholder engagement with alumni and other organizations, presentations to future students, or helping out with events, to aiding some of our professors with research projects and developing databases for the department. Working alongside the professors in our department, I have had the opportunity to assist in the development of our internship program, and also the alumni interviews on our homepage.
What are your future goals?
Throughout my professional and academic career, my goal has always been to work for either a non-profit organization or government as a policy advisor and/or advocate. Equipped with my MPA from Brockport, I know that I have the tools and foundation necessary to end up in a position that allows me to pursue my passion for policy development and research.
