How and why did you decide to apply for The College at Brockport MPA program?

I took several years off after I completed my undergraduate degree because I was uncertain about where I wanted to go in terms of my education and career.  I originally thought I wanted to pursue my MSW because I’ve always enjoyed working with and helping people.  It wasn’t until a friend talked to me about possibly pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration that I looked into nearby MPA programs, and found that Brockport offered an MPA.  I realized that a Master’s in Public Administration would allow me to continue to work with and help people, just in a different capacity, all the while still preparing me professionally for a variety of settings and administrative roles.

What’s more, I attended Brockport for my undergraduate degree, and had a wonderful experience in my program.  I encountered passionate and supportive professors, as well as eager and friendly students, and anticipated the same from the graduate program.

What have you enjoyed most about the program so far?

I’m not sure that there is one thing that I can pinpoint about the program that I enjoy the most.  I’ve enjoyed meeting a diverse group of individuals, some of whom already have experience in the public administration field, and all of whom are great assets to the classroom and the learning experience.  I’ve also enjoyed getting to know professors who have a great sense of humor and are enthusiastic about their work.  Lastly, I’ve enjoyed learning the skills that will allow me to manage an organization and lead a successful team.

What does your job entail?

I work in a residential mental health facility, where as a Residential Service Coordinator, I work with the mentally ill population.  I provide support to those on my caseload by acting as a liaison between families, medical providers, and mental health providers.  I also develop service plans on a quarterly basis to address each resident's needs and how each can best develop his skills; provide recovery oriented services; complete admissions and discharges; and observe, monitor, document, and report resident behaviors.  At times it can be a lot to track, however, assisting residents achieve their goals and working with a great team has made the experience an invaluable one.

What are your future goals?

I have always been interested in American Sign Language.  I’ve taken courses in the community, at work, and at Brockport, and now work in a program that serves deaf residents.  I am interested in pursuing my degree in interpreting and using those skills along with the knowledge I’ve taken away from the MPA program to best serve a diverse group of individuals either in the women’s health or mental health field.
