Affirmative action officer search under way

With Jan. 1, 2002, as the target starting date for the College's new affirmative action officer, a search committee chaired by Michael Maggiotto, school of letters and sciences, is already hard at work to find just the right person to fill this important position. The committee began reviewing candidate files on Nov. 1. This search committee includes Melva Brown, REOC; James Fatula, public administration; Laurie Hildebrant, facilities and planning; Gary Owens, EOP; Karen Podsiadly, leadership and community development; Eileen Rose, president's

office; and Matt Vanderwerf, human resources. Serving as Faculty Senate observers/consultants are Lauren Lieberman, physical education; and Sylvia Paul, REOC.

The new AAO, who will also carry the title of assistant director of human resources, will, in conjunction with Director of Human Resources Terry Hooper, manage the human resources function for the College. More specifically, the AAO/assistant director will:

· Develop and administer the College's Affirmative Action Plan, including the collection

and analysis of data, the maintenance of records, and the preparation and submission of required internal and external reports.

· Administer the College's recruitment, hiring, and Equal Employment Opportunity policies and procedures, ensuring the College's compliance with related laws, rules and regulations dealing with human rights.

· Advise vice presidents, unit heads, and chairs of search committees regarding search procedures and human rights policies.

· Coordinate training and development activities for supervisory, professional and non-professional staff.

· Assist in labor relations activities and grievance investigations, as well as handling complaints arising from sexual or other forms of harassment.

· Act as director of human resources in Hooper's absence.

The AAO will report to President Paul Yu on affirmative action policy issues and to Hooper for other operational matters.
