SUNY Brockport student garners state recognition

Rochester resident Emmanuel Tchanque of Harris Street, a SUNY Brockport senior, received on Oct. 31 the Continuing Education Association/New York (CEA/NY) New York State Outstanding Adult Student Award, announced Karen Schuhle-Williams, director of Special Sessions and Programs at SUNY Brockport. In August, Tchanque received a plaque and $100 check as the Region IV award winner. Later in Oct., he was the recipient of a plaque and $750 as the CEA/NY state honoree at the awards ceremony in Saratoga Springs, NY. Schuhle-Williams joined Tchanque for the festivities. This is the second consecutive year that a Brockport student has taken home the state award.

Tchanque, one of three SUNY Brockport students who this spring were named Rochester Area Colleges Continuing Education (RACCE) Outstanding Adult Student Award (OAS) recipients, was nominated for the local RACCE award by Barbara Mitrano, director of SUNY Brockport's Student Support Services Program (SSSP) and College lecturer. Tchanque is enrolled in SSSP, a federally funded program that increases the

opportunity for success among college students who qualify for participation. The program assists students in completing a college degree with the highest GPA possible by providing academic advisement, one-to-one tutoring, and personal and career counseling, and by offering free access to campus social and cultural events. As chair of the RACCE OAS selection committee, Schuhle-Williams nominated Tchanque for the CEA/NY award.

Tchanque, a triple major in computational science, computer science and mathematics, has a wife anda nine-month-old baby girl. In addition to his studies, he is a tutor for the SSSP program, holds a full-time job as a home health aide, and also volunteers for the Eastern Service Worker Organization.

To be considered for the state award, adult students must be matriculated graduate or undergraduate students who have a minimum of 3.25 GPA, and have been especially successful at combining college study with the other challenges and responsibilities of family, work and community service.
