There's an angel on campus but it doesn't have wings or a halo, and isn't named Clarence.
It's a software package and its job is to help teachers and students manage course material and communicate quickly, easily, and effectively. According to its creators at CyberLearning Labs, Angel is a complement to the traditional course format that allows faculty to tailor their course environment to their teaching style without spending excessive time on software training and support. You can browse Angel software
and see how some faculty are using the tool at http:\\angel.brockport.edu or you can visit the ANGEL creators at http:\\www.cyber learning labs.com.
Craig Lending, biological sciences, and his students in NSM631 Issues in Genetic Engineering are able to keep in touch, study, review lectures, and discuss course topics, all beyond class meetings all through the Angel software. Lending has been using ANGEL for more than a year. "It allows you to teach in a different way. For instance, I post PowerPoint classroom presentations so
students can review them after class, along with other information. I think using the program enhances the ability of students to learn and increases the level of communication within the class and between the class members and myself," said Lending.
ANGEL is up and running and every student and faculty member with an e-mail account already has an ANGEL account. Faculty will soon be receiving information from the Center on Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) about upcoming ANGEL workshops.
In case you were wondering, ANGEL stands for "A New Global Environment for Learning." It was developed at the Indiana University-Purdue University CyberLab and designed by the creators of the Oncourse project currently in operation at all eight campuses of Indiana University. Other schools currently using ANGEL include Indiana University, Penn State University, Providence College, SUNY Binghamton, Wright State College and Thomas College.
