"Mad Props" for Poker Tournaments

If we told you that a campus event was well attended by students, we'd understand if you were a little skeptical. After all, student apathy and low attendance at campus-sponsored, free events has long been an inexplicable phenomenon at SUNY Brockport and probably many college campuses.

If we told you further still that people were actually being turned away more than 30 minutes in advance because the event was already at capacity, we wouldn't be surprised if you scoffed and said we were out of our gourds. If we then mentioned that this had happened on four occasions on Thursday and Friday nights, nights typically reserved for the standard college debauchery, we'd forgive you for ripping the paper in two and shouting to the moon that The Stylus' editors had gone mad.

The best part is: It's all true and happening, courtesy of Recreational Services' no-limit hold-em poker tournament.

For those who don't know, Recreational Services has been holding a series of free poker tournaments in which the top two finishers from a playing field of 100 players get a spot at a final table being held December 3 to compete for a prize valued at $250. The top finisher in each of the five individual tournaments wins a stereo/CD player.

In each of the four previous tournaments that were held Sept. 17 and 24, and Oct 1 and 21, lines started forming as early as 5:15 p.m. to register at 6 p.m. for a 7 p.m. event. More than 30 were turned away at one event, as only the first 100 players get in the door. Free pizza and soda are provided for players who last for the first hour and many students, making it to the pizza is the only goal they seem to have in mind.

Mad props go to whomever it was that recognized the current national rise in popularity of this style of poker and we salute Recreational Services for the excellent, professional manner in which they have conducted the tournaments. Not only have the tournaments been extremely well organized but the fact that they're able to pull people in on Thursday and Friday nights is astounding. While some decry the fact they're only replacing on vice (drinking) with another (gambling), we applaud Recreational Services for providing a fun, free alternative to the typical "weekend" nights.
