Norma Lazcano, Faculty in Residence in McLean Hall

My name is Norma Lazcano and I am a citizen of Mexico. I live in Cuernavaca, also known as “the City of the Eternal Spring,” which is located about 1:45 minutes from Mexico City and three hours from the city of Acapulco. The regular temperature there is between 75F – 85F almost all year round.
I have two daughters: Ana Laura, who is 23 years old, she lives in Mexico and is a student of Philosophy, graduating this summer. My other daughter is Claudia Gabriela who is 21 years old; she is currently student in Sociology here at SUNY Brockport.
I am an Instructor of Spanish as a second language since 1979. I have been teaching in several Schools in Mexico and the U.S. During the time I taught at the Universidad Internacional in Mexico, in 1991, I started working with SUNY Brockport, with the International Education Office, as the Resident Director of Study Abroad program in Mexico.
In 1994, the Universidad Internacional sent me to teach Medical Spanish in D´Paul University in Chicago, Illinois for almost one year. In 1996, I taught medical Spanish in a St. Patrick Hospital in the Bronx, in NYC, for about six months.
In 1999, I came to SUNY Brockport as a visitor teacher for the spring semester, while Dr. Rojas taught in Universidad Internacional in Cuernavaca, Mexico. From there, I came every summer to teach a summer session classes on the Foreign Languages Department. On Spring 2002, I started working with the Foreign Languages Department as a visiting teacher, and I started as a Faculty in Residence program in Thompson Hall as well.
Presently, I am the Coordinator in U.S. for the Study Abroad programs in Costa Rica and in Mexico. I am Faculty in Residence in McLean Hall, and Spanish teacher in the Foreign Languages Department; as well as the Resident Director of the summer program in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Since 2002, I have had the opportunity to see the life style of the people in the US, as well as the International student’s life here. I have seen many students obtaining success and taking the chances and opportunities to grow and become successful adults and professionals.
