Anti-Virus Programs
Viruses can cause significant damage to your computer. Confidential information can be captured and transmitted, critical information can be modified, and the configuration of a computer can be changed to permit subsequent unauthorized access, leading to intrustions.
Installing anti-virus programs can significantly reduce your exposure to internet threats at a fraction of the cost it would take to recover from them. Upon detection of a virus, the anti-virus program moves the infected file and places it in a quarantined area for disinfection and/or removal before it has the opportunity to make contact with your computer and any of your programs.

Once in the control panel you can select many options.

- To run a full virus scan right click on “Scan all fixed disks” and select start.
- Schedule virus scan to run.
- To schedule McAfee to run a full virus scan daily or weekly double click on “scan all fixed disks.” Next, Select “Schedule” on the right hand side. Then, check enable scan at the top and select the time you desire the scan to run on the second tab.
- Update virus definitions
- To update virus definitions right click “Auto Update” and click start. However, as our default it is automatically set up to update daily at 5:00 pm.
Summary
It is important to keep your virus definitions up to date because new viruses are constantly emerging. With McAfee 8.0i’s on access scanning viruses can be quarantined and/or deleted as soon as they appear on your system. This will reduce damage in the long run. On access scanning is set to run as a default setting. However, if you notice a red circle with a line through the V-Shield in the taskbar it has been disabled. Make sure this is always running for optimum protection.
