Who Knew? The Perils of Making Assumptions in Historical Research

Although much is made of Jackie Robinson's experience as the first African-American ballplayer in the modern Major Leagues, the role of Larry Doby as the first black player in the American League is often forgotten. This paper examines Doty's life and places his life in historical context.
