Volcker and Greenspan: Inflation Fighters

Inflation! The mere mention of the word causes markets to tremble and peopleís economic confidence to falter. Fortunately, over the past quarter century the Federal Reserve has developed powerful inflation-fighting techniques. The past two Federal Reserve chairmen, Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan, were both able to successfully bring inflation under control and create an environment where the United States economy could grow and flourish. This study compares and contrasts the approaches of Volcker and Greenspan for controlling inflation. It also evaluates their respective performances as Fed chairman. It takes both descriptive and analytical approaches to examine the issues. For data, it relies on the Fedís online databases.
