Factors That Effect Decision Making for Aversive Outcomes

The subjective value of a positive outcome is dependent upon the amount and delay to that outcome. However no research has been done to examine how amount and delay interact to affect the value of negative outcomes. The current study requires participants to choose between two alternatives that differ in the delay and amount of punishment (time out from earning nickels). Results of this study indicate that amount and delay of punishers affect choices similarly for positive and negative outcomes.
