Teaching English Language Learners in Early Childhood Classrooms

Throughout history there have always been English language learners, however, up until recently not much has been done to help these students succeed academically. English language learners in the classroom is a concept that is currently being studied and discussed. For many years those involved in the field of education believed that knowing more than one language made students academically challenged. Being able to speak more than one language is no longer seen as a deficit, however, for all students learning and being able to use English is a crucial part of their education. Helping English language learners to be successful students becomes an important job of their classroom teacher. All teachers need to be aware that many programs have been created to help ELL students become successful. Choosing the appropriate program will help make sure that English language learners are given the opportunity to be successful in the classroom.
