This paper examines the relationship between rhythm and movement as a means to gain insight into ways in which rhythms are exemplified through the dancing body. Using Space Harmony theory from Laban Movement Analysis (a system for observing, describing, notating, and analyzing movement), this work illuminates rhythmic possibilities in performances by modern dance choreographer Hanya Holm and the tap dance duo Cholly Atkins and Honi Coles. By focusing on spatial rhythm rather than musical rhythm, this investigation highlights the difficulty of applying aspects of this Western system of movement analysis to dance forms with non-Western roots.
