Scholars Day 2007, Wednesday, April 11

Colombia Before Columbus

Long before Christopher Columbus encountered the "new world", the original inhabitants of South and Central America enjoyed fascinating and complex cultures. Within the country today bearing the well-known explorer's name lived several indigenous tribes, one of the most prominent being the Chibchas. Although many have heard about the Aztecs, the Mayas, and the Incas, few have heard about these ancient peoples of the Columbian high lands. Secrets of Chibcha culture and some of their exotic artifacts will be revealed. Those gathered for this presentation can determine the existence of similarities between this and other, better-known tribes of the ancient world of Latin America.
