This paper addresses the need for research in the area of domestic violence. Statistics are presented that estimate the number of victims of domestic violence in the United States. Quantitative and qualitative research on the effects of domestic violence over the lifespan of an individual are presented. Social learning theory, especially the views of Albert Bandura, are discussed and presented as a rationale for the further study of the effects of domestic violence.
