For my MS thesis research project, I assessed habitat quality for salmon and trout spawning and rearing from the mouth of Sandy Creek at Lake Ontario to the Erie Canal at Holley and Albion, NY. Brown and steelhead trout and coho and Chinook salmon all ascended the entire creek in a year of high water that allowed them to get over or around obstacles in the channel. Larval and fingerling fish of all species were found in the creek during the following year, but only in small areas with cold water imputs during the summer where the young fish were very crowded. It appears that some young fish survived and left for Lake Ontario when water was high a year later.
