The decline of the Soviet Empire can be attributed to many internal social, economic, and political factors. The disintegration of the political entity and the fall of the Iron Curtain allowed democracy to take root in this region of the world. This paper will discuss both the internal conflicts and government policies that led to the democratization of the former Soviet Union.
