Making the Most out of Social Work Policy Classes: Focused Participation for Policy Analysis and Change

Research indicates that students are more satisfied and perceive better understanding of material during experiential learning. Social work advocacy is a particular skill that is better learned through direct participation. During the Summer 2007, social work policy students worked with local advocacy organizations to collect relevant information on and analyze the policies through which welfare recipients are sanctioned by social services departments. An analysis of the policy will be presented along with students’ and instructor’s experiences throughout this unique learning experience.
