Props, too, can be performers and play an active role in dance. How do choreographers relate the use of props in their choreography? What is the definition of props in relation to dance? How can choreographers manipulate and translate the normalcy of a prop in their choreographic process? These questions were developed and inspired from works of choreographers who used props as well as my own recent prop use in my pieces. This paper will focus on the use of props in the choreographic process. The choreographic process and finished works from choreographers such as Bill T. Jones, Joe Goode, and Shen Wei will be analyzed and critiqued. The analysis will include the process of each choreographer and their use and manipulation of props as an active participant.
