The Crusades of the Middle Ages had less to do with religion than most believe. In the late twelfth century forces throughout Europe waged a Holy Crusade against the Muslims who occupied Jerusalem. The politically charged atmosphere sought to undermine Richard the Lion Heart's authority and ability to wage an effective war against Saladin.
