Alternative therapies are interventions to alleviate physical, mental and emotional pain and improve well being without the use of medications. Writing is one of the various alternative therapies entering human service work. It is a technique used by counselors and social workers in diverse settings. This intervention may be useful in alleviating stress and coping with traumatic events to enhance the therapeutic process for the client and service provider. Therapeutic journaling provides an opportunity to release pent up emotions and process various situations. Journaling consists of numerous techniques that can best reflect the topic and allow the writer to be more effective. Individuals who are victims of abuse, have addictions, or are suffering from terminal illnesses are populations known to benefit from this therapeutic approach. This presentation describes how therapeutic journaling can be used by professionals for individual and group sessions and for their own debriefing process in reducing burnout.
