In 1954 the United States government helped in the overthrow of the Guatemalan government of Jacobo Arbenz. The event itself was widely reported in American media but with little real objective reporting, due in part to the Cold War environment dominating American life in the 1950's. Only in retrospect is the reality of the US role in the event revealed.
