Although Brockport’s men’s team was a national power for three decades after WWII, Brockport Women’s Soccer (BWS) only began in 1983. But it started dramatically with an undefeated season under Coach Eugene Orbacker, a Brockport All-American in the 1950s. For over two decades BWS has matured under the very successful Coach Joan Schockow, a Cortland four-time All-American who began in 1988. My research included interviews with them. BWS reflects the evolution of how Brockport women look at themselves and are viewed by men. Female student-athletes benefit as our future workplaces may require the ability to work as a team. Playing soccer at Brockport teaches us to handle frustration, sadness, joy, pain and excitement individually and as a group. BWS entertains its fans on game day, performs community service, and is well known on campus for our off-the-field personalities. We are special because whether win or lose we stick together.
