Glory, Resistance, and Reality: The Ever-Changing Perspective of War on Film

The world of film always embodies its surrounding culture. Foreign films are praised for their accurate imagery, and American Films are praised for their presentation of American culture. However, no other genre of film depicts human culture more than war films. Looking at American War Films from three different eras, a distinct shift in culture is noticeable. The first era of film takes place from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s. This period was marked by a time of optimism and a strong honor code. The second period, from the late 1960s to late 1980s marked a period of despotism, where war was seen as a great evil. From the late 1980s to the present day, humanity accepts war as a reality of an ever-shifting world. By viewing war films made by American Directors in all three eras, a clear argument with evidence supports and proves the existence of the three eras.
