During the Vietnam War, Canada was considered to be a neutral nation and welcomed around 50,000 American war resisters. Canadian public opinion was against American intervention in Vietnam. However, a minority of around 3,000 Canadians felt that the war in Vietnam was not only justified but they needed to be a part of it. A quote from an unknown U.S. Marine in "Leatherneck" magazine reads, “The worst of ours are going north, and the best of theirs are coming south.” These Canadians crossed the border into the U.S. and joined the U.S armed forces. They came from all different regions of Canada and many went into the U.S. military for a variety of different reasons. When they arrived back in Canada after the war, they were neglected and poorly treated by the Canadian people and government.
